Cramping Creativity

Clinton says that the emphasis on testing in No Child Left Behind "puts American students in danger of losing their creative edge." She is worried that this may suppress our creative learners, arguing, "we have people who learned to get around obstacles, they didn't go in a straight line."

Well, tests can be really good obstacles. She cannot be advocating the touchy-feely pass/fail system, can she? Perhaps in her system, everyone will pass...with smiley face stickers.

A test is not going to destroy any students' creativity. It should challenge them, encourage them to pursue what they are good at and what they enjoy, while pushing them to try harder at the things they are not. This is what will create greater diversity, not coddling slackers and gagging so many with unnecessary electives.
Unfortunately, tests are required to assess quality. That is how we can determine how to improve ourselves. This is what will keep us "in the forefront of the World Economy." http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2007/6/11/92618.shtml?s=ic
